Congratulations to Isaac Wright who was the 9 year-old Grand Champion at the Lincoln Trail Area Speech Contest. He will move on the state competition at the University of Kentucky in July. WMES is so proud of you, Isaac! Congratulations to these WMES 4th grade classroom "Mad Minute" Madness Champions: Jason Hagan, Charlie Mattingly, and Logan Wheatley.  Grand champion:  Charlie Mattingly WMES STEAM Fair Winners WMES 3rd graders explore the difference between liquids and solids by making Gluep, a plastic-type substance, on the Mobile Science Activity Center from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture.  Mrs. Shewmaker's 3rd grade class at WMES performed Text Feature Surgery by finding text features in magazines and newspapers. The students used what they found to complete a text feature booklet. 4th graders presented their animal projects to other grade level students at WMES. 4th Grade Animal Projects WMES 5th grade students presented career projects to grades K-4. Students in Mrs. Shewmaker's 3rd grade class experimented with magnets. WMES student Jacklyn Farmer placed 3rd in Language Arts 5th grade division at the Jr. Beta convention. West Marion Elementary would like to recognize these Pages for the month for January. These students exhibit a can-do attitude each day at school! Look who got caught reading at West Marion Elementary!  Can a volcano pop up in your backyard? 4th graders at WMES plotted volcanoes from around the world on maps to find the answer. Students in Mrs. Shewmaker's class at WMES had to look at evidence and draw conclusions to determine who kidnapped the principal!  Students in Mrs. Shewmaker's class at WMES built a slide and used items on the slide to learn about friction. Mrs. Cambron's Kindergarten Class at West Marion enjoyed celebrating 100 days of school! Both grades have recently learned about police officers and their K-9 partners. During our snow day break, WMES issued a reading challenge to students and the winner was Gavin from Mrs. Kelly's room! Fourth graders recently participated in Idiom Day at West Marion! After reading an excerpt from Freedom over Me: Eleven Slaves, Their Lives and Dreams Brought to Life by Ashley Bryan in the library, 5th grade students at WMES built a structure using toothpicks and gum drops that would hold a book for 10 seconds. Students in Mrs. Thomas’ 4th grade science classes at WMES used what they had learned about electrical circuits to build flashlights. Fourth grade students attended Progressive Agriculture Safety Day last week at the Marion County Extension Office. Students rotated to different stations to learn all about safety. Congratulations to Mrs. Scott's fourth grade math students who are "Mad Minute Masters." They have completed 30 multiplication facts in less than one minute. 
Students in Mrs. Begley's 5th grade class at WMES were split into two groups and given 100 index cards to construct the tallest tower within 30 minutes. Full STEAM ahead!  Learning about GRAVITY in Mrs. Taylor's preschool class at WMES! Mrs. Taylor's preschool class at West Marion learn about the THREE LITTLE PIGS and problem solving. Mrs. Bartley's second grade class at WMES built structures that could stand on its own using base 10 blocks (5-hundreds, 10-tens, 10-ones).  Mrs. Cambron's students are constructing vehicles in the STEAM room at WMES. Mrs. Linda helps students in Mrs. Kelly's class in the STEAM room.  Born Learning Academy at West Marion Elementary Mrs. Wright's Kindergarten students at WMES are working together to create a vehicle in the STEAM lab. Students in Mrs. Thomas' 4th grade science classes at WMES built models of a new amusement park ride - the Bumper Coaster - bumper cars on a roller coaster! 5th grade students spent the day at the fair to experience Kentucky culture and exhibits. Students in Mrs. Kelly's class at WMES were challenged to build an object with 20 Lego pieces.  Students built garages, robots, sonar fishing apparatus, and bunny rabbits. Students in Mrs. Thomas' science classes at WMES built ramps of different heights and measured the distance a car traveled down each ramp. They collected data and reported their results on a bar graph. Students in Mrs. Thomas's 4th grade science classes at WMES went to the STEAM Lab to investigate how speed and energy are related. Mrs. Thomas' 4th grade class kicked off the year with a science scavenger hunt at WMES. Students had to search for items on the playground that were magnetic, had predictable motion, and possible habitats for animals. Mrs. Thomas' 4th grade science classes made pinhole projectors and and practiced using them so they can safely experience the Great American Solar Eclipse on Monday! Mrs. Thomas' homeroom rocking their eclipse glasses. West Marion Elementary first graders work in reading centers. Mrs. Patton, West Marion Elementary 1st grade teacher, works with students in reading centers.
