FROM THE DESK OF MRS. CALDWELL March 5th , 2018

Dear Parents:   

     Today is the 121st day of school and that means that there is that many days less for your child to master what they need to be successful for the next grade level.  Remember to stress that hard work is important to their growth as students.  Hopefully you are talking with your child about following school procedures; the importance of school; and how good work habits and attention to class will help them. We are a “Leader In Me School” and these things help to contribute to our success as this type of school. Please talk with them about their goals for the year and how they might achieve them.

March Timelines: For this family project, students are to create a timeline to show photographs of their life from birth to now. Students can use poster board or foam board to complete this project. The timeline needs to have real photographs of them growing up. For example, I would include a photograph of your child (newborn, 6 months old, 1 year old, 2 years old, 3 years old, etc.) You may also include a family photograph in your timeline because this is an important part of your life. When creating your timeline please label each photo with your child’s age in the photograph starting with the youngest photo first up to the most current photo. These timelines are due Friday March 30th

.As a grading rubric:

Real photographs of child used- includes 6 or more photos on timeline: 25 points

Title and Name of Student: 20 points

Labels telling age under each photograph on timeline: 25 points

A line drawn to show progression through the timeline: 15 points

Creativity/ Neatness: 15 points

We need each student to bring in a clean gallon milk jug for Easter projects.

 

   Traveling book:  We have had each child take The 7 Habits for Happy Kids book home for a week to share with families. I hope to see a vast improvement in each and every child.

  Reading books Children bring home books each night. It is very beneficial to your child to see you read and to be read to as well (15 minutes nightly) if at all possible. When they read track the words, tracking the words for one to one identification is very helpful. Make sure to sign the reading log and have it returned daily with books. If children see that reading is important to you; it will become important to them as well. Also, have them retell what they have read to you. It is very helpful with their retention and comprehension.   Please practice, practice, practice, as this is the only thing that makes eading easier.  

P.E. dress Remember we have P. E. on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Your child will need to wear tennis shoes on those days to fully participate in that class. If the weather permits, we will also go outside on the playground the days we do not have a P. E. class. If girls wear dresses on these days they will need to wear shorts under them to play on playground equipment so as to not have their underwear showing.

Celebrations Our birthday celebration is on the last Thursday of the month, if you want to send a birthday treat for this day. 

BOX TOPS and CAMPBELL’S soup label contest This is held monthly at our school.  At the end of each month the classroom with the most of each wins an extra P. E. period. We will need everyone’s help to do this each month. Enlisting the help of extended families is something have found beneficial. Thanks  for your help.

Homework: High frequency words for Kindergarten so far this year: I, like, the, and, see, we, a, come, to, me, with, my, what, you, are, now, is, of, so, how were many, find, from, but, this, come, on,will, into, your, be, that, who, go, here, soon, for, they, and up. Please practice these words with your kindergartener. Math- Kindergarten students will be working on comparing sets of numbers.

1st grade Spelling: will be r conntrolled vowel words and words to know from their reading series. The Spelling words for the 1st grade are: far, arm, yard, art, jar, bar, barn, bark, card, yarn, few, window, shall, night, noise, world, loudly, story. Please have your child practice daily to alleviate any test anxiety. Math for 1st grade is addition and subtraction to 40.
