Welcome to Second Grade!!!
Dear Parents and Students:
My name is Mrs. Michelle Miles and I will be your teacher for second grade. I am writing to let you know a little about me. This year will be my eleventh year teaching. I have taught 5th grade the last ten years and I am very excited about moving to 2nd grade! I graduated from Campbellsville University with a B.S. & Master’s in elementary education. I am married to Brad Miles and we reside in Springfield, KY. I have one daughter, Melanie and two sons, Tanner and Mason.
I am excited about having you in my class. We will learn a lot this year. Some interesting concepts we will grow on are: reading skills, grammar, phonics, magnets, plants, water cycle, fractions, multiplication, division, and cursive.
There are several important details that I feel I should advise all parents about at the beginning of each school year, in order to eliminate misunderstandings for the upcoming months.
Weekly Take home Folders will come home each Monday afternoon. Please take time to look at your child’s work. This is one of the most important links between school and home. It also keeps you informed of the skills your child may or may not be mastering. This gives you an opportunity to reinforce our classroom activities and praise your child for work well done.
Accelerated Reader (AR) is important in our classroom. Students are encouraged to check out at least one AR book each week when they visit the library.
Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday with weekends being free for independent reading and enjoying family activities. Being absent from school more than two days may require unfinished work to be completed at home. Homework usually consists of activities that reinforce classroom learning. There will be a planner sent home each night listing the assignments for that night. Parent sign-off is required each night.
Reading/Language Arts: Each night students will be required to read a story from our Reading Series. A Selection Test will be given on Friday to check for comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar.
Math: Please have your child study addition and subtraction facts as these will be important skills throughout the year.
Spelling: Students need to study their words nightly. Students are required to write their words 3x each on Monday’s. Students will have time in class to work on this and may need to finish this at home. Students will also have a variety of other spelling assignments periodically throughout the year. Spelling test will be on Friday.
Book Orders are sent home monthly in the Monday Take Home Folders. These book orders provide an inexpensive way to purchases appropriate books for your child’s reading level.
Box Tops For Education is an activity that our classroom will compete in. There is a collection sheet for you to attach your Box Tops (25 to a sheet).
Please feel free to contact me at school any time if you have a question. 270-699-4320 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
